One Idea for Reclaiming the Civic Commons Through Public Media and the Cost of a Coffee
By John Hornsby

If you’re Gen X like me. We grew up on it.
Sesame Street taught us to count.
Reading Rainbow taught us to dream.
Mr. Rogers taught us to feel.
PBS NewsHour taught us to think.
Nova taught us to marvel at the frontier of science.
Bob Ross taught us to embrace happy accidents.
Commander Mark inspired us to draw new worlds.
The Electric Company had that weird guy in a black bodysuit with toilet paper rolls for a face. (IYKYK)
We didn’t have to subscribe, scroll, or buy.
We just had to turn it on.
🍽️ Mental food. Civic fuel.
Public media was, and still is, the nutrient-rich soil of our democratic imagination.
But that soil is eroding.
While culture war narratives dominate headlines, what gets less airtime is this:
Congress is quietly gutting the funding that keeps public media alive.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting – the backbone that sustains over 1,500 NPR and PBS affiliates—is being clawed back.
For context?
It costs the government just $1.60 per taxpayer per year to fund it.
Less than a cup of coffee.
That’s it.
But let’s not just mourn the loss.
Let’s reimagine the response.
🛠️ Enter the Idea: Civic Signal
What if we didn’t wait for Congress?
What if we—the people—funded the signal ourselves?
What if every progressive coffee shop, bookstore, and B Corp said:
“We’ll give $1.60 per day to keep the signal strong.”
And what if legacy brands like Starbucks joined in: not just as sponsors, but as civic partners?
Not a donation.
A declaration.
✨ Let’s Do the Math
The CPB’s current annual budget?
$525 million.
Number of $1.60 contributions needed to replace it?
> 328 million.
That’s one per American, once a year.
We could beat that before breakfast.
Now consider this:
Starbucks alone sells ~3.5 billion cups of coffee annually in the U.S.
If they donated just 15¢ per cup, they could single-handedly fund the entire public media ecosystem.
Not out of charity.
Out of values alignment.
🧭 The Strategic Framework
This isn’t a suggestion for another donation drive.
It’s a systems-level brand opportunity, a 3-pronged civic infrastructure strategy.
1. Bottom-Up: Local Community Power
- Independent cafes, bookstores, credit unions, co-ops, everyday people
- $1.60 per sale/week/month donation flows to local stations
- Civic storytelling, QR codes, “Fund the Signal” cups + events
2. Top-Down: National Brands + Influencers
- Starbucks, REI, Patagonia, Allbirds, Ben & Jerry’s
- Celebrities record PSAs, donate posts, fund match
- Multi-location footprint = multi-regional station support
3. Hub & Spoke Redistribution Model
- A central nonprofit (e.g. Civic Signal Fund)
- Aggregates and redistributes funds to underfunded stations
- Prioritizes rural, BIPOC-led, educational, and crisis-communication hubs
- Transparent governance, equity-first
🎯 Brand Strategy Meets Public Good
As a brand strategist, I see this as a rare alignment between cultural memory and future-facing positioning:
- It connects generations from Gen X nostalgia to Gen Alpha need.
- It reframes a transactional moment (buying coffee) into civic participation.
- It allows aligned brands to hitch their carts to the revival of public trust. They’re not buying influence, just funding access.
If you’re a brand leader, marketer, or founder:
This is a platform. Not a pitch.
It doesn’t have to be yours to own—
It’s a commons to support.
🌱 This Is Just a Seed
I’m not building the organization.
I’m planting the idea.
So, if this resonates, run with it.
You may have the team. The platform. The reach. The capital. The community.
Or you may just know someone who does.
Forward it.
Post it.
Share it with someone who funds good ideas.
Because public media isn’t charity.
It’s civic infrastructure.
And we all depend on the signal.
Call it back.
Fund it forward.
Reclaim the civic commons through public media.
One cup at a time.
