Designing Wayfinding in Collaboration with JM Teague Engineering & Planning

In the picturesque landscapes of Person County, new updates in designing wayfinding signage design are unfolding. This collaborative venture between Hornsby Creative and J.M. Teague Engineering & Planning harmonizes the county’s rich rural heritage with its modern aspirations. The project aims to enhance navigational efficiency for both residents and visitors, weaving the local culture and history into the community’s pathways.

Project Background and Objectives

Person County faced a clear challenge: designing wayfinding systems that mirror its evolving identity without overshadowing its valued rural roots. Our goal was to create functional signage that also serves as an emblem of the county’s spirit, boosting both community pride and the visitor experience.

Discovery and Strategy

Our journey began with a thorough discovery process, using detailed questionnaires and in-person workshops to capture the community’s voice and gather inspiration. This initial phase was vital in setting the stage for designing wayfinding examples that deeply resonate with residents and visitors to Roxboro and Person County.

Five people gathered around a rectangular table engaged in an activity involving colorful cards. Two women and one man are sitting, while two women are standing. Papers, notebooks, a water bottle, and an orange soda bottle are also on the table. The background includes windows with a view of parked cars and a wreath hanging on the wall.

Design and Collaboration Process

Candace Hladick from J.M. Teague Engineering & Planning and John Hornsby of Hornsby Creative led our precisely phased collaboration:

  • Initial Consultation: We introduced stakeholders to various sign elements. This fostered a foundational understanding of the wayfinding design process.
  •
  • In-Depth Workshops: These sessions refined preferences and explored concepts. They ensured every stakeholder’s voice was heard.
  •
  • Feedback and Finalization: Regular stakeholder meetings ensured the designs evolved in alignment with the community’s feedback. This culminated in the final sign standards manual Hornsby Creative provided as part of the Master Plan developed by J.M. Teague Engineering & Planning.

Implementation and Feedback

As the signage enters the production phase, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Julie Maybee, Executive Director for the Person County TDA, remarked, “Your presentation/illustrations and engagement activities were most informative/helpful. We have received very positive feedback from Board Members and stakeholders. You did an excellent job!!!!” This enthusiastic reception has already sparked new collaborations, including the design of their new office signage.

Results and Impact

The wayfinding signage of Person County is set to become more than just functional signs. They are transforming into landmarks of community identity and engagement. The anticipated benefits include enhanced navigability and a strengthened connection among the community and its visitors.

The sections include "Low Speed Vehicular Directional Signs (LSV)," "Gateway Signs (GW)," and "Public Parking Signs (P)." The diagrams show detailed illustrations of each sign type, including their dimensions, mounting options, and design elements, with accompanying text explaining their use and specifications.
